Where the airport is

Sarajevo International Airport lies on the south-western edge of the city, between Dobrinja, Butmir and Ilidža, about 12 km from the old town. Dobrinja, beside the terminal, is a residential district with trolleybuses to the centre. Ilidža, to the west, has the last stop of tram line 3, the thermal pools, Velika alejaVelika AlejaA 3.5 km avenue of chestnut and plane trees between Ilidža’s spa quarter and the springs of the Bosna. It is closed to motor vehicles. and the springs of the Bosna.

From the terminal to Ilidža

Take a taxi from outside arrivals. Taxis charge by the meter: currently 3.50 KM to start, 2.30 KM per kilometre and 5 KM per piece of luggage, with no extra charge at night or on Sundays. The ride to River Walk comes to about 12 KM (roughly €6) before luggage. No tram reaches the airport, and the airport bus runs the other way, to Baščaršija, for 5 KM. On foot the distance is about 3.4 km, about 46 minutes beside main roads.

Late arrivals and early flights

Check-in is from 14:00 and reception is staffed around the clock, so you can collect keys after a night flight. Send your arrival time in advance and ask which of the two buildings to come to. For an early departure, order a taxi the evening before from Sarajevo Taxi on 1515 or through its mojTaxi app; the drive to the terminal takes about 6 minutes.

Arriving with a car

Car rental desks are at the airport. At River Walk, parking is free for guests, with outdoor spaces and an underground garage. Tell reception before you arrive if you need a garage space, are coming with more than one car or drive a tall vehicle.

Getting into the city from Ilidža

The Ilidža tram stopIlidža tram stopThe last stop of tram line 3, which runs between Ilidža and Baščaršija in Sarajevo’s old town.600 m · about 7 min on foot is about 600 m from River Walk, about 7 minutes on foot. Line 3 runs to Baščaršija in the old town; a single ticket costs 2.20 KM and a day ticket 7.10 KM. By taxi the old town is about 12 km, about 17 minutes outside rush hour and around 30 KM on the meter.

Getting around Sarajevo

One night or several

For a single night before or after a flight, everything you need is on the ground floor: Del Gusto and La Soul both serve breakfast, and there is a small market. If you stay longer, Vrelo Bosne is about 3.8 km away on foot and the Tunnel of Hope about 3.9 km by car, both closer to Ilidža than to the old town.
